Situated near the Old harbour and around the corner
from the Aquarium, The General Humbert’s is a buzzing La Rochelle
boozer. The bar is one of the main meeting places for the locals
and a place you don't want to miss when in La Rochelle. This is
probably the most popular pub in town.
The atmosphere is lively and convivial with very
relaxed and friendly patrons populating the establishment and excellent
service provided behind the bar.
The General Humbert’s serves a broad selection
of drinks including draught Guinness, Bass or Beck’s alongside
a wide range of premium-bottled beers such as Erdinger or Bud and
a good choice of mainly New World wines by the glass.
The welcoming staff can make a variety of tasty cocktails including
the Pina Colada, the Mojito and Caïpirinha.
A great night's drinking at the heart of the city, The General Humbert’s
is well worth a look.
This family owned pub takes its name from the French
expeditionary force under the command of General Humbert which on
August 6th 1798 set sail from La Rochelle destined for Killala,
Co. Mayo to provide military assistance to the Irish rebels of the
"Rising of '98" in their attempt to free Ireland from
English domination.
The walls are adorned with outstanding historical,
sports, music and political memorabilia. Pictures or jerseys signed
by famous Irish sports stars (Keith Wood, Brian O’Driscoll,
George Best, Willie John McBride, Brian Whelehan) and vynil records
signed by Irish music legends such as U2, The Pogues, The Chieftains
are displayed. If walls could talk, there's a thousand books within
this very building.
Famous for its great craic, popular with rugby
pros at the weekends, The General Humbert’s is also reputed
to sell the best pint of Guinness in the city, and it doesn't disappoint.
Overseas and out-of-town visitors will find the staff to be a valuable
mine of information of La Rochelle's history, sightseeing and restaurants.
A unique gathering place definitely worth visiting. |
